The interview of Rory McIlroy:

‘‘Winning the CJ Cup is a great way to start the season. Especially this is my 20th win on the PGA Tour, and it feels even more special. In the past few months, I feel that I have never worked so hard and I have not achieved what I want. I think I need to do a little better in practice content and practice time.

During the week that I won this victory, all I did in the practice area was to try and imagine every shot I made, trying to see the left arc, right arc, high and low balls, and focus on this. . The more I practice, the more comfortable it feels to perform on the court. That’s how I play golf. Regarding batting, in a nutshell, this is all you have to do-hit the ball you want. Sometimes I forget this in pursuit of perfection, but this is a good reminder that to be a great golfer, you don’t need to be perfect.

Golf is constantly moving forward, and next week will always come, and you are always trying to get better. This is a very long road. When I became a professional player many years ago, 20 victories seemed a long way to go. If you count the European Tour wins, I think it might be like my 30th win on the World Tour, so it has been a pretty good career so far.

I remember when I transitioned into a professional career in 2007, I participated in the Australian Masters at the end of that year. I got my European Tour card. In the first two days, I was in the same group as Aaron Baddeley. I remember that he was ranked 18th in the world. I thought, “Oh, my goodness, this guy is ranked 18th in the world. How cool would that be?”

Before the start of the CJ Cup, I was ranked 14th in the world, and basically people were wondering if I would retire! That is relative. My thoughts are still the same as the kids who just started. I remember the two days we spent with Elon Bedley, we played very well. He had a wonderful year, and when I was only 18 years old, I really respect him and hope that one day I will be like him.

This is an achievement I wanted to achieve at the beginning of my career, to be in the top 20 in the world. So I have surpassed all of this, but as you move forward, you must re-set your goals and everything, and you must constantly re-set. In my career, I have to do this because you have to keep going. You can’t stand still and stay the same, you must strive to become better and continue to do more things. I think that’s it.

Winning in Las Vegas is obviously a good way to start the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, but in terms of victory, this is my second win in 2021. So, after winning the Wells Fargo Championship in May, it is great to win the second victory this year. It is great to be able to win most seasons of your career, but I still want to go back to where I won three, four or five victories every year. This year has been a bit sluggish for me, but I can still win two wins, which is pretty good.’’
